“A book like this is a club sandwich” – Umberto Eco on The Name of the Rose

Umberto Eco once compared his best-selling novel Il nome della rosa to a club sandwich, when speaking about its film adaptation and how movies can’t do all the things books can.

“A book like this is a club sandwich, with turkey, salami, tomato, cheese, lettuce. And the movie is obliged to choose only the lettuce or the cheese, eliminating everything else – the theological side, the political side. It’s a nice movie.”
