Dragon Ball characters are named after food

You may have noticed that characters from the Dragon Ball saga have names which resemble English terms, such as Frieza = Freezer, and Vegeta which sounds like “veggie” or “vegetable”.

In the words of its creator, Akira Toriyama:

The one in control of the Saiyans and other villainous aliens is Frieza. Strictly speaking, Frieza is “freezer”, but I envisioned a refrigerator when I named him. So, I grouped the names according to foods that go inside it. The Saiyans are vegetables (yasai, “vegetables”), and the Ginyu Force are dairy products (gyūnyū, “cows’ milk”), like that.

Apart from Vegeta, we’ve got Broly (broccoli), Kakarot (Goku’s birth name, carrot), or Onio (onion).

Frieza’s allies carry cold-related (King Cold, Cooler, Frost) or fruits names. While Namekians have names of musical instruments (Piano, Tambourine, Drum) and Bulma’s family, underwear! (Bulma = bloomers or Japanese gym shorts) and her last name, Brief (men’s underwear).
