“Eyes on Me” from FF VIII was the first video game single to win a major music award

“Eyes on Me”, a pop ballad performed by Chinese singer Faye Wong, served as the love theme for the video game Final Fantasy VIII. The music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu with English lyrics by Kako Someya.

The song not only broke all records for a music single in a video game at the time, but is also the first video game single in history to win an award at the 14th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards, where it won “Song of the Year (Western Music)” in 2000.

Released as a CD single in Japan, it sold over 500,000 copies, placing it as the best-selling video game music disc ever released in Japan until the release of “Hikari” by Utada Hikaru for Kingdom Hearts.
