France had its own internet before the Web, called Minitel

Switched off in 2012, Minitel was a groundbreaking service which brought online banking, travel reservations, and even porn to millions of users in the 80s.

Years ago, long before the birth of the World Wide Web we now know and love, France had Minitel, which allowed the French to shop and do many other things online before the rest of the world -or most of it.

“Sister” foreign services such as Videotel (Italy), Ibertex (Spain), and Prestel (UK) also existed and died out in the 90s.
