Gmail used to be a free mail service offered by Garfield’s website

Before Google launched the now famous Gmail, “G-Mail” was the name of a free email service offered by Garfield’s website. However, the version that says that Google bought it from them is not true.

Turns out that Garfield’s site offered its g-mail from the address gmail.garfield.com while the actual gmail.com was owned by a company named US Email. At some point, it was dropped out and Google finally acquired it for its now internationally-known email service.
