Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was going to be the second book in the series

The working title for the second book in the Harry Potter saga (now known as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince -yes, the title of the sixth entry.

Originally, the first sequel was going to contain both the “Chamber of Secrets” and the “Half-Blood Prince” plotlines, side-by-side. However, J. K. Rowling decided to keep just the first one and move the second one to a later book; that’s why you’ll recognize several similar plot points such as the appearance of a mysterious old schoolbook. In …Half-Blood Prince, she included information that had first been written for the second volume of the series, and that she found did not completely fit because they would give away important parts of the plot prematurely.
