Dr. Henry Heimlich, inventor of the Heimlich maneuver (also known as “abdominal thrusts”) had demonstrated it many times in the past but, at age 96, he used it for the first time to save a life.
Here, for the first time, was someone sitting right next to me who was about to die.
Heimlich lives in Deupree House, a senior assisted living center where he and other residents have their own apartments but get together for meals in a communal dining room. Fellow resident Patty Ris (86) sat down near him for dinner when she suddenly began choking on a piece of hamburger meat. She was about to receive help from a member of the staff when Heimlich stepped in and saved her life with his own creation.
