Hulk was going to be grey instead of green

For The Incredible Hulk’s debut, creator Stan Lee chose the color grey for the character’s skin because he wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group. However, colorist Stan Goldberg had problems with the grey coloring, resulting in different shades of grey -and even green- in the issue. After seeing the first published issue, Lee decided to go with green.

This was later explained, as part of the story, indicating that the Grey Hulk and the Savage Hulk are separate personalities or entities fighting for control in Banner’s subconscious, with Grey Hulk being able to do the unscrupulous things that Bruce cannot bring himself to do.
