IKEA comes from the initials of its founder and his hometown

What does IKEA mean? Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd.

You probably have no idea what that means but Ingvar Kamprad was the company’s founder; Elmtaryd, the farm he was raised in; and Agunnaryd, a small village in Sweden, the nearest one to said farm.

The company has also revealed how to correctly pronounce IKEA: it’s not “eye-kee-ah” but “ee-kay-uh” (the way Spanish-speaking people say it) but what really matters to them is probably that you keep visiting the store and not the way you pronounce its name!
