Magellan called the Ocean "Pacific" because it was calmer than the Atlantic

The name of the ocean was originally a specific use of pacific, meaning peaceful or calm. Pacific Ocean derives from Mar Pacífico, the name given in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese to the body of water in allusion to the calm seas experienced by Ferdinand Magellan when he first reached it in 1520.
