The Mandarin word for ‘film’ translates as ‘electric shadow’

Which is funny because there’s also a movie called “Electric Shadows”; its English title is the literal translation for the Chinese term for movies: dian ying.

Released in 2004, it was the debut film of director Xiao Jiang, one of the few active female directors in China.
