The man who famously said “I have a dream”, also said “I am your biggest fan” when he met Nichelle Nichols, the actress that played Uhura on Star Trek.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge fan of the show and, when he heard that Nichols was going to leave the show to pursue a career on Broadway, he told her not to. According to the actress, he said:
You have changed the face of television forever.
King was talking about the importance of her role, since she was one of the first black women not portraying a servant, and was even part of the first interracial kiss along with William Shatner.
Nichols’ “fan” also told her that she couldn’t leave the show because it had been “heavenly ordained” and this was God’s gift to her.
