Guy de Maupassant used to eat in the Eiffel tower’s restaurant so he didn’t have to look at it

Famous French novelist Guy de Maupassant once wrote a letter denouncing the “useless and monstrous” structure the Eiffel tower was. He sent it to the minister of public works claiming its “hateful shadow” would overwhelm finer monuments in Paris

Supposedly, he liked to eat in the restaurant at the tower’s base, as it was the only place where he didn’t have to look at it!
