Mexican Rafa Márquez made World Cup history with his fifth appearance

Rafa Márquez made World Cup history by taking part in a tournament match for the fifth time (also, in a surprising Mexican victory against Germany). The veteran defender replaced Andrés Guardado in the 74th minute.

He’s the fourth player to appear in five World Cups (Korea/Japan 2002, Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Russia 2018), equaling the record of his compatriot Antonio Carbajal (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, and 1966) and of two football legends: German Lothar Matthäus (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998) and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014).
