Thomas Jefferson proposed an expiring constitution

Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America, was often criticized for his ideas.

One of them was a truly forward-looking one: having a constitution that would expire every 19 years and could be replaced with one more suitable for the new generation.

If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right.

Jefferson wrote to James Madison.
