“Willy Wonka” was translated as “The boy who drowned in chocolate sauce”

In Denmark, the classic film “Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory” starring Gene Wilder was translated as Drengen, der druknede i chokoladesovsen, literally the boy drowned in the chocolate sauce.

Doesn’t sound like a great title for a children’s movie, does it?

For the remake, they went with a more faithful translation: Charlie og chokoladefabrikken, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, the title of the book by Roald Dahl the films were based on.
