The word “orange” was first used to describe the fruit and not the color

The color orange is named after the appearance of the fruit. The term comes from the Old French pomme d’orange and the first recorded use in English of orange as a color name was in 1512, in a will now filed with the Public Record Office.

Prior to that, orange things were sometimes described as red.
